Shreyas Iyer: A Captain's Journey and Punjab's Heartbreak in IPL 2025

The Indian Premier League is a league of dreams, where fortunes can change in a single over. For Shreyas Iyer, the dynamic middle-order batsman and shrewd captain, the 2025IPL season was a rollercoaster of emotions. Having led two different franchises to the IPL final before  Delhi Capitals in 2020 and Kolkata Knight Riders to a title win in 2024  his move to Punjab Kings for an astronomical sum in the 2025 auction marked a new chapter. He was touted as the man to finally bring the elusive trophy to the land of five rivers.

Shreyas Iyer's IPL Odyssey: A Leader in the Making

Shreyas Iyer's IPL journey began in 2015 with the Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals), where he quickly established himself as a promising talent. His aggressive batting and calm demeanor soon saw him elevated to captaincy in 2018. Under his leadership, the Delhi franchise, which had long languished at the bottom, experienced a remarkable turnaround, reaching their maiden IPL final in 2020. Though they fell short against Mumbai Indians, Iyer's captaincy was widely praised.

After a brief stint marred by injury in 2021, Iyer moved to Kolkata Knight Riders in 2022, once again taking on the mantle of captain. He led KKR to a dominant performance in 2024, culminating in their third IPL title. This victory cemented his reputation as one of the most successful captains in the league, a player who not only led from the front with the bat but also possessed the tactical acumen to guide his team to glory.

The Punjab Kings Chapter: High Hopes and a Painful Loss

Entering the 2025 season as the most expensive player in IPL history, Shreyas Iyer arrived at Punjab Kings with immense expectations. The "Sarpanch Sahab," as he was affectionately called by the PBKS fans, was tasked with breaking the franchise's long-standing trophy drought. And for much of the season, it seemed he was well on his way to achieving it.

Punjab Kings, under Iyer's leadership, showcased a remarkable turnaround in their performance. They displayed a newfound aggression with the bat, consistently posting big totals, and their bowling unit, led by Arshdeep Singh and Marco Jansen, found rhythm at crucial junctures. Iyer himself had a stellar season with the bat, consistently contributing to the team's cause and leading from the front with an impressive 603 runs.
